Football Companion '99 is Softdisk's football score tracking program that will predict the game winners of the 1999-2000 National Football League's schedule. Its basis for predictions is the home or away points-for and points-against of both the teams as well as their win/loss records. The initial predictions are based on the overall statistics from the previous year, and as you can see, it predicts the Minnesota Vikings will edge the New York Jets in the Super Bowl!
Last year it initially predicted Kansas City over San Francisco in the Super Bowl. Although Kansas City did not make the cut, San Francisco did make it to the second round of the Playoffs! And six other teams that Football Companion initially picked for the Playoffs went as well! That brings the total to 7 out of 12 Playoff teams picked correctly from day one. That means Football Companion successfully picked around 60% of the Playoff teams before the regular season even started last year--let's see John Madden do that! And you can improve the accuracy of your predictions by updating your Football Companion '99 as the games are played! All you have to do is enter the final scores for every game, each week. (No messy scores by quarter, finding rushing or passing yards, etc.) You can get these scores from any newspaper! Of course, you can use Football Companion '99 simply as a way to track your favorite team. Whenever you look at the Conference screens, the teams are listed according to their absolute rank. The Playoff screen always shows the teams that would go to the playoffs if they started right then--so you'll pretty much know if your team is in before ESPN tells you! Note: Since the Cleveland Browns are new to the league this year and don't have real scores for last year, we went ahead and gave them a middle of the road average to start out. The scores we gave Cleveland are based on the average scores taken from 3 categories of teams--Overall, the NFC Conference, and the NFC Central Division. The lowest average for each statistic (Win/Loss record, Points For, Points Against) was chosen. This method was selected to keep the unplayed Cleveland Browns from ousting other teams in their Division and Conference in the first few weeks of predictions. If you feel we've under-rated (or even over-rated) the Browns, you may tweak the scores accordingly. You may even decide to wait a few weeks and see how well they play before tweaking the initial scores we gave them! NFL, AFC, NFC, and all NFL team names are registered trademarks of the National Football League or of the teams indicated.
