| Max Torque Clutches for 4 cycle Racing Karts. An excellent oval track clutch that can perform under severe operating conditions: water, dirt, dust, and oil. The major difference in this clutch versus the regular "SS" style clutch is the adjustability of the shoes and a stronger engagement spring. The drive plate is slotted to accept a special configured shoe that relies on the slots to drive the shoes. By varying the number of shoes installed, the engagement force at a given rpm can be changed, i.e.: removing a shoe will increase the engagement rpm. When altering shoe configurations in the "TT" clutch, it is important to remember that the shoes must be evenly spaced to proportionately distribute and balance the clutch in order to avoid excess vibration. Equipped with a built in 3/16" key. Available for 3/4" crankshafts and #35 chain only. |

Developed in conjunction with Chuck Brister, a major kart manufacturer in Louisana, to address one of the most frequent problems with fun karts - lubrication of the clutch bushing. This lube system supplies lubrication directly to the clutch bushing through the keyway of the engine crankshaft utilizing a special zerkbolt fitting which is available only from Max-Torque. Since its introduction in 1992, lubrication problems have been dramatically reduced.
Check to be sure that your Briggs & Stratton or Tecumseh engine has a drilled and tapped hole in the end of the crankshaft. The size of the hole should be 5/16" x 24 threads per inch. If your engine does not have this hole, the MAX-LUBE clutch cannot be used.
|
|

Tools Required to Drill Cranshaft: Electric drill, 1/8"drill bit, Ruler, Hammer, Center punch, 1/2"open end wrench
Max-Torque Supplied Parts: Clutch with built-in key, 5/16" x 24 TPI Zerkbolt and washer and Two 3/4" diameter fibre washers.
Installation Instructions: Examine the SIDE VIEW and TOP VIEW diagrams above. Remove the old clutch from the crankshaft. Disconnect the spark plug lead and slowly pull the starter handle until the crankshaft keyway is facing upward. Use a ruler to measure a point approximately 7/8" from the outboard end of the crankshaft to the center of the keyway. As shown in the diagram, the width of a nickel will also provide this dimension. Once this point is located use the center punch with a firm hit to make an indentation in the center of the crankshaft keyway. Drill a 1/8" hole at this indentation until the drill bit breaks through the crankshaft bolt hole cavity. Stop drilling. Blow out this 1/8" hole to remove any chips that might remain from the drilling operation. Place the two fibre washers onto the crankshaft, slide the clutch on the crankshaft and secure the clutch with the Zerkbolt and
washer.
CAUTION: Do not over-tighten the Zerkbolt as the hex head will snap off. No more than 15 ft*lbs of torque should be used in tightening the bolt! Using a grease gun give the Zerkbolt a full pump of grease. Replace the chain on the clutch sprocket and replace the chain guard.
Other Operating and Use Instructions:
Grease the Zerkbolt, with one squirt, after each week of operation. Avoid or eliminate incorrect gearing. The gear ratio between the clutch sprocket and the drive sprocket should be 1 to 6. For example, if your kart has a 12 tooth clutch sprocket the drive sprocket should have 72 teeth. A 10 tooth clutch sprocket would require a 60 tooth drive sprocket. Tires with a diameter exceeding 15 inches tall should not be used. If any of these suggestions are not followed, the clutch will not operate properly and clutch life will be significantly reduced.

For Engines Up To 8 Horsepower
These 1" bore clutches do not use set screws and mount onto the engine crankshaft with a lockwasher, flat washer and a bolt in the end of the crankshaft. Requires a crankshaft with a tapped end. The Part #206169A clutch for #35 chain has 12 teeth. The Part #206170A clutch for #40, #41 & #420 chain has 10 teeth. Designed and built for direct drive mini bikes and go karts, one of the most rugged applications ever required of a modestly priced automatic centrifugal clutch. Operates under conditions that would destroy most clutches. |
|
Centrifugal Clutch Selection
Determine the clutch bore size by measuring the engine crankshaft. The bore is the hole in the middle of the clutch that fits over the crankshaft. You must also determine your chain type. A Chain Size Chart is located below. Make note of these determining factors before placing an order. If you are replacing an existing clutch, simply count the number of teeth and confirm the bore size.

Centrifugal clutches do not engage at low engine idling speeds, but will engage as the engine RPM is increased with the throttle. The clutch bearing (bronze bushing) requires periodic lubrication. It's important when riding to prevent clutch slippage which generates excessive heat that can ruin the clutch bearing in two to three hours of operation. Slipping can occur while riding at slow speeds with high engine RPM.
Oil the bronze bushing (squirt oil directly on/behind the snapring) with a few drops of 30-weight motor oil before each use. Once your clutch has warmed up it's a good idea to oil the clutch again because the oil penetrates better when the clutch is hot. Never oil the clutch shoes or excessive slippage will result. Regularly check for loosened mounting bolts. Do not ride with an overtightened chain. This will wear out the center bushing of the clutch. Do not ride with your foot on the brake pedal. Never reuse a bent or distorted snap ring. If your go kart takes off by itself, that is an indication that it is badly in need of lubrication. If the go kart or mini-bike continues to take off by itself even after the clutch has been oiled then the clutch is burned up and must be replaced.
Go Karts with rear tires taller than 15" require a Torque Converter Drive System.
Centrifugal Clutches may be used if your rims are 6" or smaller.
